When caring for a resident who was both bariatric and end of life, the Joy West team demonstrated exceptional compassion. Under usual circumstances they would have transferred the resident to long-term care due to the extensive care hours, specialized equipment and his unpredictable health needs. Despite these challenges, the team remained deeply committed to meeting all of his needs on the unit with respect, dignity and empathy.
The team worked together, thoughtfully planning each task with the safest, most supportive approach. Staff communicated clearly and kindly with the resident before each action, using calm, simple language to help him feel safe, informed and comfortable.
The Joy West team listened carefully to the resident and his family, paying attention not only to his words, but also to his body language. They responded with warmth, reassurance and patience. If he expressed fear or needed extra time, the team paused, offered comfort and stayed present with him.
Using gentle, encouraging words, the Joy West team helped ease his anxiety. Staff often held his hands during moments of fear reminding him that he was not alone. The chaplain participated bringing the resident and his family deep comfort and peace during very difficult moments. When the staff were not in his suite, they dimmed the lights and played his favourite gospel music in the background.
The team supported the family as well by listening to their concerns, answering questions clearly and offering emotional support and reassurance. Their steady presence helped the family feel less alone as his condition worsened.
