Leona Lyn, volunteer

A creative mastermind in music, Leona Lyn’s talent brings healing, comfort and joy to everyone at St. Mary’s Health Care Centre. She does not simply show up to play piano. Lyn arrives ready to create meaningful connections and foster genuine partnerships in care. She recognizes each person has unique needs and memories, and she thoughtfully tailors her performances to honour those differences.

As each residents enters the facility, Lyn’s chief goal is to learn their cultural joys and where music fits into their identify. She learns new music a resident may enjoy, so that person can share a part of their lives with others. For residents with dementia, she chooses music from their youth to spark memories and facilitate conversations. For those experiencing pain or anxiety, she chooses soothing melodies that promote relaxation and comfort.

Lyn works closely with the spiritual care team, coordinating music selections for worship services, memorial gatherings and moments of reflection. She provides comfort to families during difficult times by arranging music like hymns and sacred music that brings solace and peace. Lyn supports the recreation team by providing diverse musical entertainment for residents.

Her dedication to service inspires others to share their own musical talents. Lyn has orchestrated events with other external volunteers to unite staff, residents and families. Her outreach extends to local music groups and schools, creating intergenerational programs where students perform alongside residents.

Her presence directly improves residents’ quality of life, supports care objectives and demonstrates the powerful role music plays in holistic healthcare.
