Carmela Cordova, administrative assistant

In her role as hospice administrative assistant, Carmela Cordova engages with people from varied backgrounds and disciplines ensuring their perspectives are welcome and incorporated into daily operations. Her calm, empathetic approach fosters open dialogue and encourages team members to share their ideas without hesitation.

Carmela is the go-to support for the interdisciplinary team. She seamlessly manages multiple responsibilities from staff scheduling and unit clerk duties to onboarding new hires and completing payroll while ensuring workflow remains smooth for everyone around her. She anticipates needs and addresses issues before they become barriers.

She helped fulfill a resident’s end-of-life wish to experience a traditional lion dance at the hospice. She reached out to her community contacts at the Chinese Cultural Centre and worked closely with the volunteer coordinator to make it happen. Carmela handled the conversations, logistics, cultural considerations and coordination to bring the performers to the hospice. On the day of the visit, the hospice was filled with colour, music, movement and joy. It created a moment of connection and celebration that honoured the resident’s heritage and spirit.

Carmela shares her knowledge, spirit and organizational insight with team members, empowering them to grow and succeed in their roles. She mentors new staff with patience and clarity ensuring they feel confident and supported as they integrate into the hospice environment.

She worked with the nursing team to support a family who was struggling to make ends meet this Christmas. Carmela helped gather gifts and donations for this family of seven.
