Dwayne Buhler, chaplain
A connector, Dwayne Buhler, brings people together — colleagues, residents, families and community partners — to create meaningful experiences and improve care. Within the site he works closely with leadership to plan and deliver initiatives that strengthen community spirit. Dwayne’s work fosters inclusion and ensures care is holistic and person-centred.
Dwayne builds strong connections with patients, residents and families by spending time with them, listening to their concerns and addressing these concerns promptly. Recognizing the unique needs of male residents, he initiated a M & M group, creating a safe space for men to share their thoughts and enjoy activities. He often invites guest speakers to enrich the experience. On Remembrance Day he honoured residents’ histories by inviting veterans to speak, fostering a sense of pride and belonging.
One of Dwayne’s most impactful contributions was advocating for an end-of-life room after witnessing the challenges faced by a palliative resident and their roommate in a shared space. Dwayne invited local groups like Akasu Palliative Care Society to contribute funds to develop a separate space. His efforts led to the creation of a dedicated, dignified space that residents and families deeply appreciate.
Dwayne works closely with the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate whose presence and involvement enrich the spiritual and cultural life of Mary Immaculate Care Centre. He collaborated with site leadership and Ed Stelmach to organize a Sisters’ Legacy Day honouring the heritage and values that shape the site.
